“I am only one, but I AM one. I cannot do everything, but I CAN do something. I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” – Edward Everett Hale
This one really made me think, he is absolutely correct, are you one of those who sit back and are unhappy about certain things and think there is nothing you can do to make it right? So you don’t even try. Instead maybe you complain, or judge, get angry or feel sorry for yourself?
Think about this, if all of us instead thought, hmm maybe if I did just this tiny small piece that would make me feel better, then maybe another small piece of something else. I can be like Nike and “Just Do It!” lol Now if everyone or a majority of folks thought like this, how many problems could be solved? Whether they are large problems or small problems, does it matter? no, of course not. Everyone’s dreams start out with a beginning, one step at a time. YOU are ONE, you CANNOT do it ALL, however YOU CAN DO SOMETHING! How Powerful is that? To me it’s huge!
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a disease my four (soon to be five) year old grandson has, this is terminal, there is no current cure. It breaks my heart daily to see his struggle and deterioration along with my daughters utter heartbreak in trying to keep him safe, calm, happy and to make all his moments count. What I cannot do; come up with a cure, I cannot make him live longer, I cannot make his pain go away, I cannot promise he will be walking next year, I cannot promise that he will always be happy.
However, what I can do is this: I can promise I will be there for him, I can make every minute I am with him special, I can make him laugh out loud, I can get on my knees and really play with him, I can listen to him, I can snuggle him, I can rock him to sleep, I can keep up to date on all the new research and information that comes out, I can transport him where he needs to go. I CAN put down my phone and live life to the fullest with him, while he is in it.
This link Below shows the average Duchenne life span. It just so happens that our little guy seems to be progressing more rapidly, however we hope that it levels off soon.
What else can I do, I can make people aware of this disease, I can help with walks and fundraisers, I CAN make the right choices for him and our daughter to live and not dwell on the negative. I CAN choose to be optimistic and positive and take little steps to make a big difference.
