Paying it forward

After my post yesterday I got to thinking that this year, instead of making resolutions that no one ever keeps, including myself; I’m going to do something fun this year that I’ll actually look forward to and enjoy.

We always hear of “paying it forward” however what does that mean? It can mean numerous things to different folks.

“The greatest effects we have on the world are the ones we can never see.”
Chris Matakas, The Tao of Jiu Jitsu

How true is this, one random act of kindness can cause a domino effect that we will never know the outcome of :-). I love this, it brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.

So twice a week I’ve decided that I am going to make a conscious effort to pay it forward in a more unlikely way. I’m not wealthy by any means however there are a couple things we can all do. In the past I’ve paid the toll for the person behind me coming over the Narrows Bridge, this morning I  bought coffee for the lady in line behind me at Starbucks. I also have a dear friend who has passed now, however his son had rented a movie from Redbox and found a $5.00 bill inside and a note that read “popcorn and candy on me, enjoy the movie” . How cool is that and how inexpensive to be able to do simple things such as these say twice a week or whenever you feel like it.

Any other random acts can do the same thing, opening doors, geesh how long has it been since someone held a door for you instead of some teenager or young person running thru it and slamming it back in your face, more often than not it’s young men. How hard is it even if your in a hurry to let one person merge in front of you instead of seeing them wanting to get over and speeding up at the last minute.

“Every once in awhile try to do something nice for somebody you don’t know, even if it’s just leaving an opening in traffic for them to merge into, small things like that give people hope that we’re not all assholes.”
Joshua Neik

This one makes me laugh out loud as I’ve actually had this happen to me where some nice person goes out of their way to let me merge or change lanes in busy traffic and I’ve voiced that very same thing, “all peeps are not assholes” or “wow there is one nice person left on the planet” lol.

Have you ever just hand written a quick note and left it on a co workers desk saying, it’s great working with you, you make me laugh or nice job! I tell you that years ago I had a manager after a long trip I set up for about 40 of us to do some training, leave me a handwritten card that said what a kind person I was and what a great job I do. I have to say I’ve kept that card and when days get rough at work I sometimes pull that out and read it and it makes me smile. It’s odd how the smallest of gestures can mean the most.

Do you leave your significant other notes, other than the grocery list 🙂 do you leave notes for your kids telling them how proud you are of them. Leave them in random places for them to find at will. Trust me it will make their day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you pay it forward so I can pick up more ideas !!

Best, Lorrie
